Bass trap vs flat panel? Read this first

Two different jobs. A flat absorber panel tames mid and high reflections on open walls — echo, flutter, harsh consonants. A bass trap like this cube targets the low frequencies that collect in room corners, where flat panels barely help. Bass is long-wavelength energy: it builds up where two or three surfaces meet, and you control it with depth and density in the corner. Most well-treated rooms use both: flat panels at first-reflection points, bass traps in the corners. How many do you need? Start with the four vertical corners of your room (4 pieces) for the biggest low-end improvement. Add the top tri-corners (where two walls meet the ceiling) to go further — that's where bass piles up most.

Technical reference — NRC, STC, and what a bass trap does

Two acoustic numbers come up when people shop for room treatment:

• NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient): how much sound a material absorbs, averaged across speech frequencies. This bass trap typically sits around NRC 0.45–0.90 as a broadband figure — but the reason you put it in a corner is to attack the low frequencies NRC doesn't fully capture. Depth + density + corner placement is what tightens the bass.
• STC (Sound Transmission Class): how much sound a full wall assembly blocks between rooms. STC describes the wall (studs, drywall, mass, sealing), not a foam piece in the corner — so no bass trap, ours included, carries a meaningful STC rating.
