How Mass Loaded Vinyl works

Noise has one big enemy: mass. The denser the surface, the less sound passes through. Most apartment walls, hollow doors, and car panels don't have enough mass - that's why you can hear the neighbor's TV, traffic on the freeway, or your washing machine three rooms away.

Our Mass Loaded Vinyl is 2 lb/sq ft (9.8 kg/m²) - the same weight pros spec into recording studios and home theaters. A single 12 x 12 in (30 x 30 cm) tile weighs 2 lb (0.91 kg). That mass is what blocks airborne sound.

  1. Lay or stick the tile on the noisy surface - drywall, door, floor, ceiling, vehicle panel.
  2. Cut to fit with scissors or a utility knife. No power tools.
  3. Cover or paint if you want a finished look - or leave it bare in a closet, garage, or vehicle.

Result: a measurable drop in noise transmission within an hour of opening the box.

Pairs with our Door Weather Strip (KK1154): MLV blocks sound through the panel; weather strip blocks sound through the gaps. Use both for the strongest result on bedroom and home-office doors.

What the numbers mean

2 lb/sq ft (9.8 kg/m²) - This is the surface weight. In acoustics, mass is the single biggest factor in stopping airborne sound. 2 lb/sq ft is the industry-standard "heavy" MLV - the same weight pros use behind drywall in studios and home theaters.
STC ~31-33 - Sound Transmission Class. STC 30 is "loud speech audible but not understandable." STC 33 is "loud speech barely audible." Layered on top of an existing wall, the gain stacks - typical drywall + 2 lb/sq ft MLV reaches STC 40+.

What's in the box

  • Your chosen pack: 1, 6, 12, or 24 sheets
  • 12 x 12 in (30 x 30 cm) each
  • 2 lb/sq ft (9.8 kg/m²) surface weight

Install in 3 steps

  1. Measure the area you want to quiet. Lay tiles edge-to-edge to plan coverage.
  2. Cut to fit with scissors or a utility knife. No saws, drills, or contractor.
  3. Apply with double-sided tape, construction adhesive, or screws. For doors and machinery, peel-and-stick acoustic tape works fine.

Made for

Apartments with noisy neighbors, home theaters, recording and podcast studios, vehicle floors and doors, noisy washing machines and HVAC units, home offices on busy streets, bedrooms next to a freeway, nurseries, hotels, classrooms, conference rooms, and houses of worship.

FAQ

▾ Do I need a contractor to install this?

No. Most customers install it themselves with scissors and double-sided tape in under an hour.

▾ Will it block my neighbor's bass or subwoofer?

It will reduce it. Low-frequency bass is the hardest noise to block; for heavy bass, layer 2 lb/sq ft MLV behind drywall with an air gap. Mid and high frequencies are blocked dramatically - STC 31-33 turns loud speech into a muffled murmur.

▾ Is 2 lb/sq ft heavy enough for shared apartment walls?

Yes. 2 lb/sq ft is the industry-standard MLV weight pros use behind drywall in recording studios. For thin shared walls, layer it on top of the existing drywall and add a thin acoustic underlay if possible.

▾ Does it smell?

No. Low-emission, non-toxic. Safe for bedrooms and nurseries.

▾ Can I paint it or cover it with fabric?

Yes. Most customers cover with fabric, drywall, or acoustic foam panels for a finished look.

▾ Will it stick to a brick wall?

Use construction adhesive on brick or concrete. Double-sided tape is for drywall, doors, and metal.

▾ How many tiles cover one wall?

An 8 ft x 10 ft wall (~2.4 x 3 m) is about 80 sq ft (~7.2 m²) - that's 80 tiles. For most apartment walls, the 24-pack covers a focused trouble spot.

▾ Is it waterproof?

Yes. Safe in basements, garages, vehicles, and laundry rooms.

▾ Can I return it if it doesn't work?

Yes - 100-day returns on unused, sealed tiles. Email service@arrowzoom.com with your order number.

What's the difference between impact and airborne noise? 🔊

1. Airborne Noise

  • This travels through the air, like conversations, TV sounds, or barking dogs. When sound waves hit a building, they cause it to vibrate, transmitting through the structure.

2. Impact Noise

  • This results from physical impacts on buildings, such as footsteps, slamming doors, or moving furniture. Impact noise can be harder to isolate, as these vibrations are stronger and travel further through dense materials.

What are decibels? 📏

Decibels are measured logarithmically (not as a percentage) . This means that every increase of 10dB on the scale is a tenfold increase in sound pressure level (SPL) . Near silence is 0dB 🤫, while a sound at 10dB is ten times louder!

  • 30-40 dB = Soft music, whisper 🎶
  • 60-80 dB = Office noise, traffic 🚗
  • 85-100 dB (HARMFUL) = Subway, shouted convo, chainsaw ⚠️
  • 100-140 dB (DANGEROUS) = Chainsaw, loud concert, racing, shooting range 🚨
